Hang Them High

In the year of 1750 BC, Hummurabi, the King of Babylonia had the famous Hummurabi Code of 242 verses ground in stone and vividly displayed to the public, but it was directed to law enforcement agents; such as judges, kings, and any others who had the power to impose punishment on the wrong doers and the verse is, “An eye for an eye and an arm for an arm” This was written 350 years before the Old Testament was put together.
That brings me to the little boy Zachary Christie and Christina School Board of education in Wilmington Delaware. Zachary Christie is a six year old first grade pupil, who was suspended from school for bringing with him a Boy Scout camp utensil, less harmful than a sharpened pencil. He wasn’t only suspended, he was to be separated from the rest of the school children and be placed in a reform school, which houses the incorrigible students.
There he was ordered to spend 25 days behind bars at a reform school to be reformed.
School Masters of Christina school; take a deep breath and please tell me if that is the way to do it. “Hang Them High”? The answer to that question is that the school has “Zero tolerance” policy.
Be aware of authority showing off its power, it’s like glory looking for more glory, it never ends.
Can any fair minded person imagine, “Zero Tolerance” policy for six year old elementary school children?. Zero tolerance policy is proper and fitting for ‘Terrorists” Zero tolerance policy means no patience, no compassion, not even a trace of kindness or understanding. And it’s not fitting for elementary students.
Does anybody realize that the schools and thoughtless parents are bringing up angry children? We realize that most parents don’t have the time or the skills to educate their children, that is why we started the schools, but we should expect the teachers to have the skills, to have the patience and the compassion that is needed to educate the children.
Thank God, all the teachers are not heartless and thoughtless, but the ones who are, should look for another job, because school teaching is not a job to show off authority and flaunt muscle to the young children,
I admit, that schools have their own pedagogical method in handling children and it is a difficult job to teach children, who come from several deferent backgrounds, impregnated with several deferent philosophies, accustomed to their family teachings and values, but the teachers should know that they have in their hands the world’s future; and children should be “HANDLED WITH CARE” and school rules and regulations should be curved to fit those different young heads.
The schools’ pedagogical method of teaching should not include” a Zero Tolerance” policy, for teachers to use to vent their own anger on young children, who some times slip off the main track.
The way I feel is that Zachary Christie became the victim and the school board is the villain. The reason we heard about Zachary is because somebody rang the Media Bell.
Writing this article about the Zachary Christie incident, I will boast my opinion on a “Zero Tolerance Policy” about teachers and give them a dose of their medicine and see how they are going to like it; in fact I may go to the extremes with them as they did with Zachary.
The six year old boy’s harsh punishment leads me to believe that there are many children who suffer the same way as Oliver in Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist”? There must be many, but we don’t hear anything about them? The parents are either brain washed to believe that the teachers are doing the right thing or they are afraid to speak up and mend the wrong. Parents should have “Zero tolerance” for teachers’ behavior.
I think a Judge should be appointed and should find them guilty as charged, which is mental cruelty on a child, and compel them to read Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist” to realize that there is a very little difference in character between them now, and Fagin, Bill Sikes and the other unkind characters who abused Oliver in the book; or worse yet they are similar to Don Quixote who went after the windmills mistaking them for the enemy; or Bill. Bill was my main character in a short story that I have written about a mentally disturbed man who was running around town with a whip in his hand, beating up shadows, thinking that the shadows were demons.
The School Masters of Christina School board of Wilmington Delaware, behaved in this case, like school “Bullies”. There is no shortage of “Bullies” in the world we live in. There are the Police Bullies, the Student Bullies, Judge Bullies and let us not forget the Political Bullies. From what I hear and read, there must be a great shortage of teachers with compassion.
Talking about police bullies, I read in the internet some days ago that a ten year old girl was arrested for having a tiny lemonade stand in the park, and if the father wasn’t there to pay the fine the little girl would have gone to jail.
Going back to teachers of Christina School, I understand this is not the first time the faculty of that school acted like school bullies, this has happened before with a little girl who brought her birthday cake to school to share it with her friends and she also brought a butter knife to cut the cake. She was caught with the butter knife and was suspended and given 45 days in a reform school.
Between me and you and the lamp post, School Masters, please tell me how many students do you think she could have killed with that butter knife, before she was caught?
School Masters, it looks to me that you have never heard of the Hummurabi Code, something every person with authority should be familiar with, that is why the Hammurabi Code is posted in eleven federal buildings throughout USA, but haven’t you heard of Child Physiology. Do you have any idea what a child goes through, having been punished for something the child did, but didn’t think it was something bad to be so severely punished?
For your information many children lose respect, confidence, some contemplating suicide and some do die and many rebel and others become angry with the world and carry that anger throughout their lives.
At a later date, I will tell you about my own personal trauma that I suffered, being unjustly punished when I was a mere 8 year old child.
Hearing that a little six year old boy was suspended for something trivial, I was at loss to comprehend, what the outcry from the school meant.
I come to a regrettable point to believe with all my heart and soul, that the reason those teachers behave in that manner is not the “Zero tolerance” policy, they are only hiding behind that policy, but they have their own problems, bring them to school and vent their anger on innocent children, That kind of thoughtless act reveals that some sort of madness is harboring within their breast and is misnamed discipline. I also come to believe that other harsh disciplinary acts are happening in schools and they must be looked at, by higher authorities before the situation gets worse.
This morning another similar situation came to my attention, I don’t have all the details, but I will report them to you at later date, but now I will tell you what I know.
There is a 17 year old boy, in Troy, New York named Whalen. He is a high school senior whose life long dream was to attend the West Point University and it was about to be realized until one morning he was called in to the school’s principal’s office. The principal asked if the student was a carrying a knife and the boy answered “No” He was asked if he owned a knife and the answer was “Yes” and he went on to say that the knife was less than two inches long open from end to end, and it was in his first aid box, in the trunk of his car. The principal followed the boy to his car and the little knife was tucked away in the trunk of the car and in a first aid box . It was confiscated by the teacher because the car was parked in school property. Because of the possession of the little knife, which was almost the same size as a toe nail clipper, the boy was given 5 day suspension. The Board of Education , later on, finding out that the boy called the police to verify the little knife’s state of illegality and was told that was nothing illegal about the knife, he was given another 35 days suspension Needless to say the father of the boy,
Kevin Whalen got involved with that unkind treatment of his son. The Father’s and son’s biggest worry was now, how the West Point University would look at the punishment. They called the University, and were told by the University that it will not have any bearing on the boy’s entrance.
Dear reader, bear in mind, even though the teachers were fully aware of the boy’s dream was of attending West Point, and believing that the punishment would affect the boy’s entrance, they still went ahead making a mountain out of a molehill, as if they wished to stop the boy from realizing his lifelong dream. To me that is nothing but pure Malice, which resembles hate, and the Board of Education of Troy, New York, is hiding behind the “Zero Tolerance” policy to execute their bad deed of the day..
If what I write is true and you are a fair-minded person, doesn’t the spokesman of the seven Board of Education directors, remind you of the movie “Hang Em High”? In the movie, which is fictional, Pat Hingle, as the hanging Judge, Isaac Parker stood by the window of his courtroom and watched the hanging of men with a smile on his face. I picture in my mind the principal of the high school standing by his office window, watching the 17 year boy going down the tubes along with his dream.
I live in Thailand for the time being, I called the boy’s high school, I introduced myself, but who ever answered the phone hung up on me once he realized who and what I was . The man I spoke to on the phone sounded more like a Czar than a teacher for children, and before he hung up, he made certain that I understood that all seven directors of the school are sticking to their guns.
I, being a novelist and always looking to finish my stories with a happy ending, wish they turned, those guns he was talking about, on themselves and fire at each other until they are all down and out. If the father of the young boy institutes a suit against the school and the teachers, charging them with Malice, and if Lady Luck teams up with Lady Justice, that is when the guns of the board of education will go off on each other and I will get my wish and finish my story with a happy ending.
